Why prints are important, I only want digitals?

I understand why you think digitals is the way to go, I have them safe on my computer and I can print my photos anywhere, anytime, right?
Well yeah, I guess you can, but there are some things you should know.
Your photos essentially start in the camera, but there is so much that goes into photography that most people don’t know.
If you have ever gone to your local retailer and had a photo printed and it did not print how you thought, it would, or it wouldn’t fit in one of the standard sizes, colours were yucky? Well, there is a reason for that.
Most retail printers are not checked for colour correctness, nor are the printers adjusted depending on the paper they print on, there is only a few standard sizes to print 5 x7 or 8 x 10, but depends on your photographer and what they provide you as a digital will depend on what size you can print, I hear you say, so does it really matter?
I think so, as if I was going to spend money with a photographer to get professional photos done, I want to make sure when I print them, they are not only going to print like I expect them to but also, they are going to last without fading.
I use only professional print labs for my business and those that I use have their printers adjusted for colour and for the paper they print on, I also have to ensure that my colours match their printers and papers, yes it can get very technical, but that is part of the knowledge and experience a good professional photographer has.
Why Prints Are Important: More Than Just Digital Files
Written by Jackie Allender
In today’s digital world, it’s easy to understand why so many people say, “I only want digitals.”
Digital files feel practical. They’re convenient, easy to store, simple to share with family and friends, and can be uploaded to social media in seconds. You may be thinking, If I have my images saved on my computer or phone, I can print them whenever I want.
And technically, yes—you can.
But when it comes to professional photography, there is a big difference between simply having digital files and turning those memories into quality prints that will truly last.
If you’re investing in professional photography, whether it’s newborn, maternity, family, or milestone sessions, your images deserve more than being stored away on a hard drive or buried in your phone gallery.
Digital Files Are Convenient, But They’re Not Always Forever
We live in a time where thousands of photos sit on our phones, computers, USBs, and cloud storage accounts. The problem is that digital storage can create a false sense of security.
Technology changes constantly.
Hard drives fail. USBs get misplaced. Phones get upgraded, lost, or damaged. Cloud services change or require subscriptions. Files can accidentally be deleted with one wrong click.
Many families believe their images are “safe” simply because they exist digitally, but digital storage isn’t foolproof.
Professional prints, on the other hand, are tangible. They can’t disappear because of a software update, forgotten password, or corrupted hard drive.
A printed photograph can be held, framed, displayed, and passed down for generations.
Prints Turn Memories Into Part of Your Home
There is something incredibly meaningful about seeing your memories displayed in your everyday spaces.
A framed family portrait on your wall. A newborn album sitting on your coffee table. A collection of milestone images beautifully displayed in your hallway.
These are not just decorations.
They are visual reminders of your story.
When images remain digital only, they are often forgotten. Hidden in folders, buried under thousands of newer photos, or simply never revisited.
Prints bring your memories into your daily life.
Your children grow up seeing themselves loved, celebrated, and valued within the home. Family photos displayed on walls can create a stronger sense of belonging and identity for children.
Photography was never meant to live only on screens.
Not All Printing Is Equal
One of the biggest surprises for clients is realising that not all photo printing is created equally.
You may have experienced this yourself. You order prints from a local retailer or department store and suddenly:
- The colours look strange or dull
- Skin tones appear orange, green, or washed out
- The image is cropped awkwardly
- The photo doesn’t fit a standard frame size
- The paper quality feels thin or cheap
It’s frustrating, especially after investing in professional photography.
There’s a reason this happens.
Professional photographers don’t simply take beautiful photos and hand over files. There is significant technical work involved behind the scenes to ensure images are colour accurate and print correctly.
Retail print labs often do not calibrate their printers for colour accuracy the way professional labs do. Their machines are designed for volume and speed, not fine art quality.
This means your images may print very differently from how they were intended.
Professional Prints Are Designed to Last
Another major difference between retail printing and professional prints is longevity.
Cheap consumer prints can fade surprisingly quickly depending on:
- Paper quality
- Ink quality
- Exposure to sunlight
- Storage conditions
Professional print labs use archival materials specifically designed for longevity.
This means your photographs are created using:
- High-quality papers
- Professional-grade inks
- Colour-managed printing processes
- Materials designed to resist fading over time
When you invest in professional prints, you’re investing in products designed to last for years—not just months.
Your family memories deserve better than fading away in a drawer.
Photography Is Meant to Be Experienced
Photography is emotional.
It captures fleeting moments we cannot repeat.
Your newborn will never be that tiny again. Your maternity journey lasts only a short season. Your children grow and change faster than we ever expect.
Scrolling past these memories on your phone simply doesn’t create the same emotional experience as holding an album or seeing a beautifully framed portrait on your wall.
Albums invite storytelling.
Wall art creates presence.
Loose prints tucked into a keepsake box can be rediscovered years later and shared with future generations.
These are experiences digital files simply cannot replace.
Why Professional Photographers Offer Prints
When photographers offer professional prints, albums, and wall art, it’s not about upselling for the sake of it.
It’s about protecting the final result.
A professional photographer understands:
- Image sizing and cropping
- Print resolution
- Colour calibration
- Paper finishes
- Product design
Many photographers work closely with professional labs to ensure their editing style matches how the final products print.
This process can be surprisingly technical, involving calibrated monitors, printer profiles, and product testing.
It’s part of the expertise you’re paying for when you hire a professional.
You’re not just paying for digital files—you’re investing in an experience and finished artwork.
Digitals Have Their Place, But Prints Complete the Story
Digital images absolutely have value.
They are convenient for sharing online, backing up memories, and keeping copies accessible.
But digital files should ideally complement your experience, not replace the importance of physical products.
Think of digitals as the convenience.
Think of prints as the legacy.
Long after technology changes and file formats become outdated, a printed photograph remains.
It can be held in your hands, displayed proudly in your home, and passed on to your children.
Final Thoughts
It’s completely understandable to initially think, “I only want digitals.”
But once you understand the difference between digital convenience and professionally produced prints, it becomes clear why printed photographs still matter.
Photography is an investment in preserving your memories.
If you’re choosing to document your family’s milestones professionally, don’t let those images live forgotten on a device.
Display them. Hold them. Pass them on.
Because years from now, it won’t be the folder on your laptop that matters most—it will be the beautiful prints that tell your story.
